GUIDE to SELECTING a SPECIAL EDUCATION  MEDIATOR or IEP FACILITATOR

 

 
  1. Decide what you need to address at the Mediation or Facilitated IEP.
 
  1. Gather a list of Special Education Mediators & IEP Facilitators for your review by contacting:
 
      Your State Education Department, Special Education Office 
      Parent Advocacy Groups 
      Other parents 
      Other school districts
 
  1. Interview the Mediator/IEP Facilitator to:
 
      Evaluate trainings attended by him/her in both the Mediation of Special  Education Issues and the Facilitation of IEP Meetings. 
      Evaluate his/her knowledge base about Special Education and the IEP process. 
      Evaluate his/her level of experience in the field of Special Education. 
      Evaluate his/her level of experience with IEP Meetings. 
      Investigate his/her style of mediating and facilitating. 
      Investigate the ethical standards that he/she follows. 
      Investigate the degree of confidentiality after his/her involvement in the process.
 
  1. Evaluate any written materials created by the Mediator or IEP Facilitator with regard to the Special Education Mediation process or the Facilitated IEP process.
 
  1. Determine who will arrange the logistics of the Mediation or Facilitated IEP.
 
  1. Evaluate whether the Mediator or IEP Facilitator can work within your time frame.
